Record Snowfall in the Rockies

gabe2012

While our friends out east are faced with an early end to their ski season due to the unseasonal temperatures, we've been blessed with record snowfall this winter.

Sunshine Village has broken records for snowiest March and is only a few cm away from breaking the season record of 30 feet! This morning Lake Louise broke the March record, dating back to 1955-56. They are well on their way to have one of the snowiest season ever. Castle, Fernie, Kicking Horse, Kimberley, Marmot Basin and Norquay are all boasting amazing conditions as well with another 30-80cm of fresh snow this week!

Take Time for Yourself

20120308-005JP and Avery have left you with their thoughts on why they love skiing or their perspective on lift lines.

I thought that I would chime in with my thoughts on why we all need to take a day and go on an adventure.

We all put in a lot of time and energy into our work. Whether our work is for a company we work for or the one we started...

Playing in the Snow

20120121-024We've finally gotten a decent snowfall in Central Alberta but it's not going to be around for long. With warmer temperatures and sunny weather in the forecast we better make the most out of this weekend!

Here's a few ideas for things to do around Red Deer this weeekend (all snow related, of course)...

Record Snowfall at Sunshine Village

With 123cm of fresh snow in 5 days this last storm that hit much of Alberta was the largest snowfall at Sunshine Village in 40 years. This brings the total snowfall for the season to 773cm!

Talk to Yourself!

self-talkSelf-talk is an important part of life, we rely on it to help us perform and focus. There are many thoughts that can go through an our head before, during and after an activity. If you are able to harness these thoughts, an you can become as mentally tough as an athlete.

Sit Ski Backflip

Salomon Freeski TVJosh Dueck story's is truly inspirational. Since recovering from a devastating accident in 2004 that left him as a T11 - full paraplegic he has pushed sit skiing to new levels. First through racing and now as a free skier with the first sit ski backflip on February 3, 2012.

Red Bull Supernatural

red supernaturalRed Bull Supernatural claims to bring 18 of the worlds best backcountry snowboarders to Bald Face in Nelson, BC for a 1 day freestyle competition. They spent the summer building new features and getting the terrain ready. What do you think of events like this?

Worth Talking About - February 6 2012

It was a great weekend for Canadian athletes with World Cup gold medals in Alpine, Ski Cross and Cross Country skiing:

What's your favourite Apres-Ski food? Here's a few suggestions...

Klaus Obermayer is a legend in the ski industry and at 92 he's still going strong. What do you think of his idea of giving free lift tickets to beginners?

Skiing for the fun of skiing

whitefish

With our 3 year old son learning to ski, I've spent a fair bit of time lately thinking about why I love skiing;

What keeps bringing me back? What keeps me wishing for more days on snow, and why do I start dreaming of the next time I get to go skiing the minute I get home from a day of skiing?

A Simple Loaf

simple loafWhether a simple meal by the campfire, a snack on the bus or an evening of fine dining at one of the great resorts we get to visit, food is part of all great adventures. It was only a matter of time before it became part of our adventure talks.

To kicks things off, here's a quick recipe for a great loaf. It's perfect for those days on the hill or simply as an afternoon snack with a cup of coffee.

Be SMART about it

Smart2You’ve set a New Year’s Resolution, have you taken any steps towards achieving it? How will you know you’ve achieved it?

The best way to make sure that this occurs is to be SMART about it!

Avery on Lift Lines...

Long lift linesLift lines are a part of skiing or snowboarding. We love to hate them. It’s a given that you’ll go through a whole range of emotions as you wait and I like to call this the 4 stages to altitude adjustment.

First you’ll feel disappointment. Just as you get down the hill from what was of course, your best run ever, there it is... the lift line. It’s not just a line, it’s a giant mass of smelly, sweaty neon wearing yahoos...

Just Spectacular!

p1030165 167x125For those who know me or have ever heard me talk about snowboarding you’ll know that Kicking Horse Mountain Resort is my favourite place to ride… ever. So yes, I’m a bit biased when I say that the day trip to Kicking Horse was the best trip I've been on so far this year.

Conquering FEAR

Why is the word "fear" so powerful? It is a small four letter word; you are bigger than it is. Why do we let it control so many of the things that we do?

A large part of this is just because we let it. If you say something often enough, you start to believe it. “I hate spiders” is it because something happened? More often than not it is because you’ve told yourself enough times that you hate spiders and now you do.

Sockey Night for the United Way

DSC 0044Last weekend Pursuit was lucky to be involved in a great Fund (and Sock!) raiser for the United Way in Central Alberta. The United Way of Central Alberta is an organization that helps fund needed community projects and build strong communities.

Passion Reborn

sunshine chairThis Sunday was our great trip to Sunshine with Char Normandeau from 100.7 fm the River. We had some very enthusiastic skiiers and snowboarders with us that absolutely loved the great conditions.

As always, there was more to this day than we ever expected. Char is a former snowboard instructor that left behind more than a job when she left the mountains...

Picking the Right Ride

Snowboarding Santa'Tis the season for new snowboards falalalala lalalala! This is always a hard time of the year as a parent. You don't want to give away that you're getting the kids a new snowboard for Christmas but if you don't ask them you might not get what they need.

Let us give you a hand finding the perfect fit this year, read our handy guide.

Skiing as a Family

IMG00265-20101126-1602One of the reason we started Pursuit Adventure & Travel was so that we could spend more time as a family, especially skiing.

Skiing with kids can be a lot of fun. It can also be very frustrating. The good news is that there are a few small things you can do now that will make things easier once you get on snow as a family this holiday season.

Great Conditions at the Lake

DSC 0001

We were greated with lots of fresh snow for a great first trip of the season to the Lake. With all lifts now open, this is as good as it gets for November skiing!

In Pursuit of Twitter

Did you know that Red Deer has many great people who are using twitter to network, order lunch and stay connected (among other things) in 140 characters or less?

You might be asking yourself, what good is a message service that only allows you to post 140 charaters at time?  We had been asking ourseves that same question and went looking for answers. In our quest for answers we decided we would attend a #RDTweetup at Traptow's Cool Beans Bus in downtown Red Deer and our Twitter journey began...

Great Early Season Skiing at Nakiska

DSC 0037It's good to be back on snow! Our first day trip of the season was at Nakiska this past weekend. Snow conditions were excellent with good coverage on the open runs.

Opening Dates

DSC 0098It's that time of the year. The excitement is building up and the ski season is finally here after a long summer without snow... With fresh snow in Red Deer it's time to get ready for the first trips of the season.

Thanksgiving in Banff

avery on_rockThanksgiving brunch at the Banff Springs Hotel delivers far more than expected (even with our lofty expectations for amazing food).  The staff was some of the best we've ever encountered in a hotel and the food...well just one word works best "WOW".  The selection of classic Thanksgiving fair and new favorites was a sigh (and taste) to behold.
